Risk Assessment

There are some risks we will both have to be aware of when filming our music video.

* The wire's from the lamps that we will use to make the shop brighter, will be tied together so it will decrease the chance of someone tripping over it.

* The sweet jars are right back on the shelves to avoid one falling down off the shelf.

* Make sure the floor is dry to avoid anyone slipping on it.

* Make sure the floor is clear of sweets to avoid someone tripping on a sweet.

We will check these points before we start filming to increase the safety of the location.

Animatic

Similar Videos;

To help us re-create our video, we have taken ideas from Panic Cord - Gabrielle Aplin and Dumb by Tich.

Both of us really liked the songs and videos. Also they are similar to our artist Nina, in the style of music and style of videos.

Representations

Throughout the music video, we're trying to potray Izzy to the audience as a sweet girl who is trying get away from her retail store job (the sweet shop) and live her dream, which is to become a singer/songwriter.
We are going to show this to the audience as we're using the idea of a 'memory box' and her having a book which Poppy (izzy) is going to write lyrics in. You'll see shots on her working in the sweet shop, looking bored, or doing something wrong and constantly listening to music. Other shots of her writing lyrics and then shots of her singing with her guitar.
To show to our target audience that she is a sweet girl, we're going to dress her in a denuim dress, giving her a cute look, and doing her hair and make up pretty, but not over the top. We also want give off the homely/girl next door look, which dressing her in dresses and shirts will give her that style of look, like Nina.
You will be able to tell through her facial expressions that she is bored of her normal shop, and she loves singing. This will be shown through close up shots of her in the shop and her singing.

Schedule List

Outdoor Shots;

- There are only 3/4 shots which are filmed outside.
- All outside the sweet shop - scenery location.

Indoor Shots;

- Bedroom
- Sweet shop
- Store room

We going to be filming during day light hours so we can get the best light possible. Hopefully the weather will stay dry, so then we're able to film the outdoor shots. However we can work around this, although the lighting will be different to other shots.

The majority of the music video is being filmed indoors, only a couple of shots outside.

As we're filming a chunk of the video at my house in my parents bedroom, we are able to use the room at any time we wont. We have decided weekdays will be best, so then we can film the sweet shop at weekends.

We will be filming the sweet shop on Sundays when the shop isnt open. This will allow us to have the whole day to film, giving us plenty of time to get the shoots finished.

Storyboards

I have made a start on creating our storyboard. We have made up one minute worth of shots and drew out the pictures and the description underneath each shot. We have included details in the description such as
What type of shot it is?
Is the camera moving?
What is the mise on scene of the shot?
What is the character doing?

We will continue to do this for all the shots to complete the storyboard. We will then take pictures of each shot we have drawn out and make an animatic of the music video using the shots we have drawn out whilst the song is being played in the background.

Evaluating Class Feedback;

Overall I think our pitch gives a clear understanding of what our video will be based on and gives an ideal plot of the storyline. We have also summed up everything in the pitch, however we didn't considered lighting which will be used, mentioned our artists name, the artist which we will be using, and I think we need to re-consider our target audience and who our video is mainly based towards.
Location is also something me and Sophie need to consider and decide on where exactly we want to use, and where will be best to film our video.

Most of our footage will be filmed indoors and in daylight hours, so hopefully if the day is bright, then the lighting will be "daylight lighting".
We have named our artist, Poppy Mills. This is because it sounds like a pop/folk music star, your typical acoustic guitar girl.
We have yet to decide who we will be using for our artist, but we have a couple of people in mind. Hopefully we'll decide within the next couple of days, so then we can make sure they're able to be in our video and be willing to film more than once.
I think the target audience is more from a range of 12-19 rather than 16-22. This is because I think her style of music will appeal more to a younger audience, and she'd be the perfect role model for girls that age. The target audience is definitely towards females, although you may get a couple of male fans as well.
Location wise, I think the sweet shop will be betted suited for the video, as we are allowed to use this on sundays when the shop isn't open, so we have access to it all day.

I think overall, most people got a good idea of what exactly we want to achieve for our music video.

Possible ideas

We have been looking at different music videos for inspiration for our own music video and we have found possible ideas we could recreate.

This is quite a girly shot to do, by shooting the girl riding happily on her bike. This also creates the image of the girl next door. I think this would be effective in our music video because it is about being bored of her current job, and this could be the way she could get to her job.

We want to recreate this shot by different words coming up on different objects/props. For example this is cinema notice board. I think by posting some of the lyrics onto different objects during the video will look effective.

For example this burger van has got some of the lyrics on it under the hatch. It stands out and makes the video more interesting.

We like the idea of a split screen by showing four/two different faces/emotions. We think this will add more of a variety of different effects to the video and make it more interesting. We could do some well known symbols such as the peace sign to add the girly essence to the video.

Song Change - Way in the World

We have decided to change the song choice for our coursework from Stay out by Nina Nesbitt to Way in the World by Nina Nesbitt. We have decided this for many reasons, firstly the song 'Stay out' already has a narrative video which we were thinking of recreating. However after thinking about what ideas we could possibly film they are very similar to the current music video of the song. So we had to change the song because we did not want to rip the video off.  We needed to find a song which does not have a narrative video. As we have done a lot of research into Nina's style and genre we wanted to find another one of Nina's song we could recreate. So after taking that into account we have chosen the song 'Way in the World' as this does not have a narrative video already and still has an upbeat and pop feel.

Influenced Artists and Fashion

Ellie Goulding's style of music is Indie/pop genre. A lot of her music videos are similar to Nina Nesbitt's, as they don't have any choreographed dances in it, Ellie Goulding is dressed in clothes from places like Urban Outfitters and the videos are simple and easy, not too much going on. Ellie Goulding is an artist which will influence some of our work as we'll take some ideas from her music videos and put them into our own.

Both Nina Nesbitt and Ellie Goulding are looks which would be achievable if you were to go shopping and go back with their style of clothing etc. Both of these artist will influence our own artist, as we'll hopefully find someone who is similar to Nina Nesbitt. For big artists like Rihanna and Jessie J, you wouldn't be able to achieve their looks without it taking a while. Also people like Lady Gaga who have their clothes and outfits made for them, something like that would be impossible to achieve. Nina Nesbitt style is very homely look, so shops like Urban Outfitters and Topshop where you'd find her clothes would be from.

Abercrombie and Fitch and Jack Wills clothing give off that homely look as they're not your typical "River Island" kind of stores.
We may want to dress our Artist/s in clothes from these particular stores, because we want to give off that homely feel.

Hair product adverts may influence our artist, as they may use the products which are being shown on the adverts, e.g. the vo5 advert creating smooth and silky hair.

Artist;

We have chosen Izzy to be our artist in our music video because we felt she was best suited for the look we're trying to achieve. Izzy is 18, which is the perfect age for our artist and also our target audience. We want to give off your "typical popstar idol" through the video for teenage girls aged 12+, and Izzy will give off this look well.
Female Artist.
Izzy will suit the style of clothing Nina Nesbitt wears, and also herself dresses in things from topshop, which will benefit us when trying to style her.
We would be able to style Izzy to make her the perfect artist for our video, with her hair and make up done up we'll achieve the correct look.
Izzy is also suitable because of her looks, hair, she's sweet and girly and has long'ish hair, which is the look we're going for and we want to give off this "sweet, girly" look to the audience.
We're also at an advantage because Izzy is able to sing, act and play the guitar.

Biography

Nina Nesbitt;

Nina Nesbitt is a 19 year old singer/songwriter who has an unbelievable talent with rare determination. She got her first guitar just over four years ago, and with only finishing school in 2011, and doing gigs during her time at school, her success since then is remarkable.

Nina was bought up in Edinburgh by her music loving parents. Initially she wanted to be an author, but from the age of 6 she'd write short stories which she put into music at the age of ten when she got a keyboard.

She first sang in high school when she took part in a variety show, and after that she entered more shows and began playing at acoustic nights at Edinburgh's Electric Circus. Nina then started to post covers onto youtube of her idols, Kelly Clarkson, Ellie Goulding and Taylor Swift. She taught herself the guitar, and continued storytelling lyrics. One of her first songs she wrote was Standing On One Leg, which was wrote about her growing up.

Nina met Ed Sheeran at a Radio gig in Edinburgh, which she sang Standing on One Leg in front Ed, when he offered her to open his show in Glasgow. She was the offered to support Ed on tour and have a guest spot at his show at Shepherds Bush Empire. Also Example, who liked Nina, booked her to support three arena dates in 2012.

Nina turned down label offers for nine months as she was determined to build her fane base and develop her sound herself, she ignored all advice from youtube and saw an interest in her sweet, feisty folk-pop soar.

In 2012, Nina toured Europe with Ed Sheeran, and in april of that year she released her second EP; The Apple Tree. Her song reached the top 10 of iTunes, topping the iTunes singer/songwriter chart.

Nina finally signed a record deal with island records, but on her owen terms.

Nina's first major single came our in October 2012; Boy. Nina said that "its indicative of what's to come on my album". Nina is based in London to complete her debut album recording, which she is co-producing with Gosling.

Song choice - Stay out by Nina Nesbitt

This is the song that we have both decided to use for our music video. The song is called 'Stay out' by a nineteen year old girl called Nina Nesbitt. She is a scottish singer songwriter. She has a pop/folk genre style to her. We have decided to pick this artist and song because we both like the song and think it is achievable to pull off the style of how the video is portrayed. For example this video is based around Nina and five of her friends going out one night. This therefore means we will have no problem in finding some girls that will be suitable to star in our video. The image that Nina portrays is not as polished as other more mainstream pop artists such as Jessie J or Taylor Swift. For example they are very 'perfect image' with their heavy make up and hair sprayed hair. However Nina's image is a lot more relaxed and casual so will be easier to pull off and create.

Our Artist name is Poppy Mills and like a lot of artists on twitter we've named our twitter, "PoppyMillsMusic". As we've decided to use the song, Stay Out by Nina Nesbitt, and base our music video around her, we've chosen a name that fits well with the folky/indie/pop style.

We have only followed a selected amount of people and all these people relate to our coursework and music video.
Ellie Goulding style and looks are similar to Nina Nesbitt, and her music videos are also well produced.
Nina Nesbitt is who we're basing our music video on, and also we're using her song "Stay Out" for our music video. Also some of her other music videos we'd like to take ideas from.
Tich's music video "Dumb" is very well produced, and we'd like to use some of the ideas from her video to use in ours, also her music and style is different to Nina, but we may use it in a few scenes.
Urban Outfitters and Topshop are the typical shops that Nina Nesbitt would shop in, as she dresses indie/folky style, and Urban Outfitters and Topshop clothes give off that type of style.
We both really like Eliza Doolittle and Gabrielle Aplin music and styles and maybe we could adapt some of the music videos and take ideas from theirs to put into ours.

Top Tips Videos

Choreographer

The choreographers job in a music video is to add movement or choreography to the individual artist or the background dancers. They work along side the director, this is important as they need to bring to life the concept of the music video that the director has in mind. They mainly focus on the angles, shapes and silhouette of artists as this brings out the general message and feel of the song. The choreography is also a way to bring out the expressions as that helps the audience have a better understanding of the song.

Commissioner

The commissioners job is to be the matchmaker between the director and the creative and then between the artist and the label. They have a skill in photography because the job involves a lot of practical photography. They work with the designs of the music video and the layout.

Director

The directors job is similar to an artist. They have to have a clear vision or a clear idea on what they want the music video to be like. They have to be create and to be open to experiment different things  if some ideas don't work with the artist. Sometimes they get a stimulus from the band or artist and then work on that to get ideas for the music video or sometimes they try something completely original. They have to do things fast as they are given short time spans to get the video done so organisation is key.

Director of Photography

The director of photographys job is to head up camera and is in charge of the lightening. They share their ideas with the director and collaberate with what ideas can be done. They also need to discuss with the director what they want so they know what cameras to use, what lenses to use and how to light up the artist. After knowing what the director wants they can now make up a lightening plan for the whole music video.

Editor

The editors job comes in directly after the video has been shot. They firstly get hold of every single shot and all the footage that has been filmed and start to cut it down. It is very useful for the director to have an editor because it is a fresh new pair of eyes looking at the footage as they were not present when it was being shot. It is very important to have a second opinion as it could potentially lead to new ideas of how to piece the footage together to make it work. If the video is a performance video it is their job to make the artist look as great as possible at all times. If it is a narrative video it is their job to get the story through to the audience as clear and as professional as possible. It is important for them to be creative and musical.

Make up and costume designer

The make up and costume designer work with the director and the art director to make their visions a reality. They start by doing sketches of possible outfits and different hairstyles whilst the director is discussing what they want. They generally work to a brief from both the director and the art director. They need to be observant and always having to adapt costumes if they don't look right on camera or it doesn't fit the artist right etc. When doing different videos they will be on different budgets so money management is key when buying and sourcing all the costumes and different types of make up.

Producer

The producer runs the production from the very start of the video to the very end when it gets released. They work with all people from every aspect of the music video. They facilitate with every single one of the directors ideas if this cant be done they think of what could be done instead. They are in charge of the schedule and the budget and booking the crew, cast and locations that are used. They have to be a very organised person as they have to prepare every idea that the director has for the video.
